| The head of the state and executive power is the President. The President is elected through universal voting among the citizens of the Republic of Kazakhstan for a period of seven years. |

| The President forms all main government agencies, including the Government, except for the Parliament and the Supreme Court. |

| The President manages the lawmaking activity, signs laws and international agreements, determines the program of development of the country for the next several years. |

| The Parliament is the supreme legislative and representative body of the country. It adopts new laws – acts of supreme legal effect, approves state budget, controls the Government, forms the Supreme Court. It consists of two chambers – Senate and Mazhilis. Deputies of the Mazhilis are elected by the people through direct voting for 5 years; deputies of the Senate are elected by territorial representative bodies for 6 years. |

| The Government is formed by the President. It brings draft budget and laws into the Parliament, ensures their enforcement and application, and administers the state machinery. Members of the Governments are ministers and heads of branch departments. |

| Constitutional Council supervises the compliance of normative legal acts and actions of state authorities with the Constitution. |

| The judicial system consists of the Supreme Court (judges are elected by the Senate) and territorial courts (judges are appointed by the President). |

| Local government consists of the representative bodies – Maslikhats, and executive bodies – Akimats. Akims are appointed by the President; deputies of Maslikhat are elected by the population of the corresponding regions. |
